In 2021, A Magazine invited English-Jamaican designer Grace Wales Bonner to create its twenty-second edition, titled Rhapsody in the Street.
Wales Bonner established her eponymous label in London in 2014 after graduating from Menswear at Central Saint Martins. This issue reads as a survey of the research and references behind her work, moving between archival portfolios, newly commissioned essays, poems, and portraiture rather than settling into any single register.
The issue opens and closes with blessings from poet Ben Okri, and carries conversations on Jamaican dancehall and the Kamoinge collective, an African and African-American photographic collective established in Harlem in 1963.
Features in this issue also span Ghanaian film photography, leading into paintings and poems by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, John Goto's Lovers' Rock series, which captured the spirit of the Lewisham Youth Centre in 1970s London, and new poems from Roger Robinson.
New photographic work runs across Los Angeles, London, Miami, Paris, and New York, including a self-portrait by Ming Smith, Steven Traylor's portrait of Damian Marley, Zoë Ghertner's study of Selena Forrest, Paul Mpagi Sepuya's studio work, and Tyler Mitchell's tender portfolio capturing Bonner's SS17 collection, Ezekiel.
Made in collaboration with the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, a series of self-portraits by Samuel Fosso wearing Wales Bonner archive pieces appears as a print insert within the issue. The issue combines matte and gloss stocks with gilded pages throughout.
