Comme des Garçons Homme promotional postcard. Photography by Shinji Mori c.1980s
These original promotional postcards were distributed through Dianne B at 116 Wooster Street, SoHo, New York.
Dianne Benson was one of the most significant voices in American fashion retail during the 1980s. Her SoHo store opened in 1982 when, in her own words, “SoHo was nothing but artists' lofts and galleries”. It became a cultural landmark, leading directly to the opening of a 5,000 square foot Comme des Garçons store on Wooster Street in 1983; the first Comme des Garçons store in America.
At a moment when the Japanese avant-garde was provoking and dividing the Western press in equal measure, Benson was among the first American retailers to champion Comme des Garçons; giving Rei Kawakubo's work a home during the precise moment it was redefining what fashion could be.
